EDVARD GRIEG Music for Cello

Schumanns immeasurably beautiful Cello Concerto marks the start of my 26/27 season. Tonight in Biel/Bienne🇨🇭at 7:30.
Only months after his 40th birthday, Schumann completed his cello concerto in late October 1850 —which he called a „Concertstück“. He had already planned such a composition in Dresden in 1849.
As a non-cellist, Schumann was venturing into new compositional territory with this work; he was not well-versed in either the playing techniques or the sound of the instrument at first. His wife, Clara, described the concerto as being written „in a way that truly captures the character of the cello.“ A treasure of our repertoire today.

Anne-Sophie Mutter releases the second album in her ASM Forte Forward series on Alpha Classics, American Tunes #1, coinciding with her 50th anniversary concerts at the 2026 Lucerne Festival.
In this second volume of the ASM Forte Forward series, Anne-Sophie Mutter performs works by two composers
close to her heart. First, André Previn (1929–2019), to whom the violinist was married for several years, and with
whom she remained close friends until his death. A jazz pianist, conductor and composer, the multifaceted
talents of this great musician opened up new musical worlds for her. Here she presents his Piano Trio (2009), as
well as his Violin Concerto No. 2, composed in 2010 for solo violin, string orchestra and harpsichord, a nod to
Baroque music and to an instrument that is unusual in contemporary music ensembles.

My musical companion over this summer has been the enigmatic Cello Concerto by Samuel Barber.
Written back in 1945 right at the end of the Second World War, Samuel Barber opens a deeply rhetorical, questioning, doubting, and mourning statement.
I studied this piece when I first heard it with my teacher Steven Isserlis in his fantastic recording together with Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony. I’m now preparing it for the 27/28 season - revisiting pieces over and over again at a certain stage remains one of my essential joys.
In sync with music, I’m fascinated anew each time by the beauty of nature, exploring the various Austrian Alps and Lakes going on many hikes.

Mourning and saddend by the passing of Walter Nothas (1938-2026), my long time teacher in Munich.
Walter has studied with André Navarra in Paris and in Zermatt with Pablo Casals. He was for many years Principal Cellist of the Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Playing with conductors such as Kempe, Kubelik, Steinberg, Bernstein and Sir Colin Davis.
Walter has taught three generations of cellists, many of them playing in very prestigious Orchestras today. We are grateful for his recordings, a.o. Dvorak Cello Concerto, Messiaen Quartet, Brahms and Schubert Sonatas. Reflecting a musical era after the Second World War.
The music world has lost a most sincere and charismatic cellist and fully committed teacher.
Prof. Walter Nothas will always be remembered, he has given joy, discipline and grounding to so many people. I’m deeply grateful to have had him as a friend and mentor in my life.
Through music we will always keep connected.
